Caries Treatment
What is Caries Treatment (Filling)?
Caries treatment (filling) is a dental practice that includes procedures applied to treat tooth decay. Caries can be defined as the deterioration of the hard tissue on the tooth enamel as a result of the dissolution of the hard tissue on the tooth enamel by the acid effect caused by bacteria. Caries treatment aims to prevent the patient from experiencing pain and discomfort by stopping the progression of caries and preserving the health of the tooth. Caries treatment may vary depending on the extent of the decay and the damage. Decay caught at an early stage usually requires more minimal intervention, while advanced decay may require more extensive treatment. The main goal of caries treatment is to remove the decay, repair the damaged tissue and restore the health of the tooth.

- Cleaning the Decayed Tissue: The dentist uses instruments to clean the decayed area and remove the decayed tissue. After the inside of the tooth is cleaned, caries treatment is started.
- Filling Application: Filling material is used to fill the cleaned cavity and re-stabilize the tooth. Fillings are aesthetically pleasing as well as restoring the functionality of the tooth.
- Canal Treatment (when necessary): If the decay has reached the pulp (inner soft tissue) of the tooth and infection has occurred, root canal treatment may be necessary. In this procedure, the infected pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned, disinfected and filled with filling material.
- Veneers or Crowns (if necessary): In case of major decay or pulp damage, veneers or crowns can be used to stabilize the tooth.
How Long Does the Treatment Process Take?
The caries treatment process can vary depending on the extent and damage of the decay, the treatment method and your dentist’s preferences. It can usually be completed in a single visit for simple cavities, while more complex cases may require multiple visits. Each individual’s situation is different and the duration of the cavity treatment can vary accordingly.
What are the Types of Caries?
- Simple Caries: If the decay is in the early stages and has not reached the inside of the tooth, this type of decay treatment can be completed in a single visit. The treatment usually takes between 20 minutes and an hour.
- Moderate Caries: If the decay has reached deeper layers of the tooth, treatment may take more time. The dentist will clean the decay, remove the damaged tissue and apply a filling. This type of treatment can usually take between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours.
